Cave men decorated their dwellings with drawings depicting the events of their lives. Mayans hacked their stories into the stone walls of their enormous structures, and the pharaohs’ talented artists decorated pyramid walls with art celebrating the magnificence of the pharaoh. Michelangelo painted biblical scenes on the walls and ceilings of the chapels of his day. You get the gist - for thousands of years, humans have not been able to leave the surface of the walls around them untouched.

So how have we allowed our walls to morph into boring expanses of beige, bland blank? Are we afraid to let our lives and our passions show on our walls? Are we too wimpy to move away from the white and sparse designer look with the obligatory three accessory items ‘casually’ displayed on the mantel? Or is there so much visual noise in our lives that we need the peaceful and calming effect of blank walls when we finally crash at home or in our hotel room?

We feel that there is no right answer, but we do like walls that get us thinking or make us smile. We may not want them in our homes, but we love the ones we’ve seen in restaurants, hair salons, cafes and shops. We admire the work of artists and designers who are not afraid to move beyond the limits of canvas and create visions that should forever alter the meaning of “staring at the walls” and “watching paint dry.” But all is not lost. We get bothered every other day with all the stupid advertising in our jordanian newspapers and magazines.. Now here’s a website done by my colleague Rami, that expresses the rage against such disturbing ads.. Feel free to comment and criticize there at any time!

Blackboards were wiped after use: they were meant for immediate communication, not for record. Even as they were being used, their messages were continuously revised, erased and renewed. But when Einstein came to Oxford in 1931, he was already an international celebrity. After one of his lectures a blackboard was preserved and has become a kind of relic. It is the most famous object in this Museum.

This exhibition marks the centenary of the Special Theory of Relativity by inviting a number of well-known people in Britain today to chalk on blackboards the same size as Einstein’s. All these guest blackboards have been prepared in the early months of 2005. The result is an exhibition about science, art, celebrity and nostalgia. The blackboard is fast disappearing from meetings, classes and lectures: ‘bye-bye blackboard’.

Stina Persson has lived, studied and worked in Tokyo, New York, Florence and Lund, Sweden, where she was born. She says her illustration style is basically about “finding the right balance between the edgy and the elegant the raw and the beautiful.” To achieve this, she uses ink, watercolor and gouache, as well as Mexican cut paper (used at ceremonies and festivals). Recent projects include the poster for the musical Billy Elliott, the cover for the magazine Flaunt and a summer campaign for Absolut. She is featured in Laird Borelli’s new book “Fashion Illustration Next”, Pao & Paw’s “Clin D’Oiel” as well as the Italian book “Fashionize” by Delicatessen. Stina now lives and works in Stockholm with her journalist husband and son Astor. Stina’s work has appeared in many publications, including Elle (UK, Swe, Greece, Brazil) , Flaunt, Marie Claire (US, UK, Spain), Nylon, Jane , AMICA (Ger), übersee (Ger), CosmoGirl, Io Donna, Travel & Leisure, Gourmet (Swe), Self , Madame (Ger).
